Jessica's Law — Life Without Parole

Jessica's Law seriously enhances the sentences for sex crimes. Under Jessica's law, if you are a habitual offender (twice convicted) for any sexually violent crime and are convicted of any one of the specifically listed sexual offenses in Jessica's Law, you may be sentenced to life without parole. If you have one prior conviction for a sexually violent crime and are convicted of one of the listed sexual offenses listed in Jessica's Law, you are eligible for parole only after serving 40 years in prison. If you are over the age of 18 and are convicted of a sex crime that involves a minor under of the age of 14, you can be sentenced to life even if you don't have a prior record. Therefore, if you are charged with a sex crime, you need to immediately contact an attorney.

Sex Offender Registration

Once convicted of a sex crime, you are required to register with the sex offender registry. This has major consequences on the rest of your life. You will always be labeled as a sex offender. The registry is public knowledge, so everyone will know your birthday, what crimes you committed, where you live, etc. If you are going to take a plea, you have to understand that consequences of what you are agreeing to. When I meet with clients, I take the time to clearly explain each of the options they have and the possible ramifications.
